If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to a cozy cabin in the mountains… the snow falling outside, fireplace crackling, and a mug of tea warming your hands, then you’re in good company. Buying and decorating my A-frame in the mountains of Vermont has been one of the most exciting, challenging, and rewarding experiences of my life. From house hunting solo to turning a fixer-upper into my dream snowboarding getaway, this little A-frame has become my perfect winter escape.
1. Buying a House Solo: A Journey I’ll Never Forget
Buying a house on my own was something I had always wanted to do, but it felt intimidating. The search process, the budgeting, the endless Zillow scrolls. it all felt overwhelming at first, especially being by myself. I always had a vision of buying a vacation home with my husband and tackling all the home projects together, but sometimes plans don’t go as planned. It felt extra special to be able to accomplish such a feat by myself. When I finally held those keys in my hand, it was the most empowering and proud moment of my life.
There’s something incredibly special about knowing that you built this dream for yourself. Not relying on anyone by yourself. No shortcuts, no safety net. Every email with my realtor, every late-night financial spreadsheet, every “maybe this is the one” showing led to this: my first home in the Vermont mountains.
If you’re thinking about buying solo, my advice is simple, do it scared. The reward of walking into a space that’s entirely yours is worth every ounce of uncertainty.
2. Finding the Perfect House: My Dream Winter Escape
When I started my search, I knew exactly what I wanted: a cozy, snow-covered mountain home close enough to the slopes that I could snowboard at sunrise and still make it back in time for my first work meeting. Vermont has always held a special place in my heart — the crisp air, the quiet mornings, and of course, the snow. It’s a place where I healed and started to step into my own power. The fond memories I have here will never escape me.
The moment I saw the little A-frame nestled between pine trees with a view of the mountains, I just knew. It wasn’t perfect, but it was full of potential. It was a real fixer upper, a diamond in the snow, if you will. It had that quintessential “mountain cabin” charm with exposed beams, high ceilings, and just enough character to make me fall in love. I mean I can’t be the only one who dreamed of an a-frame in the mountains!
3. Getting a Fixer Upper: Pros, Cons, and All the Paint Fumes
Let’s be honest: buying a fixer-upper is not for the faint of heart. I knew going into it that my A-frame would need work. ….and it did. From ripping up carpets and installing wood floors to replacing a roof and renovating a bathroom into a laundry room.
The Pros:
- Creative Freedom: I could design every detail exactly how I wanted.
- Lower Price Tag: The house was more affordable upfront, which freed up budget for renovations.
- Personal Pride: Every improvement feels like an accomplishment (because it is).
The Cons:
- Time and Effort: Renovations can be exhausting, both mentally and financially.
- Unexpected Surprises: Old houses love to throw you curveballs (hello, 1970s wiring that had to be completely replaced, oh and the re-leveling of my slab foundation).
- Patience Required: It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
In the end, I chose the fixer-upper because it gave me the chance to make this A-frame truly mine. Every paint color, every piece of furniture, every corner of the house reflects my personal style and the journey it took to get here.
4. Finding the Perfect Mountain Décor: Cozy, Neutral, and a Little Bit Snowboard Chic
Once the major renovations were done, it was time for the fun part, decorating! I wanted the inside of my Vermont A-frame to reflect everything I love about winter: calm, cozy, and a little adventurous.
I leaned into neutral colors, lots of soft greys, taupes, and warm woods — to complement the natural light and mountain views. I added textured throws, vintage snowboards/toboggans, faux fur rugs, mountain photos and warm lighting to create that “mountain escape” vibe.
Snowboarding has always been my escape from the everyday. It’s where I feel most free and inspired, but more important it’s something that challenged me and is something that I am proud to say I enjoy. At the end of the day, I wanted my home to mirror that same energy. Think modern mountain meets cozy chalet: comfortable, stylish, and unapologetically winter-loving.

- Mountain Scented Candles: Notes of pine, cedarwood, and a hint of smoke — instant cabin vibes. It’s always Christmas and winter smelling in here!
