Swimming at the Beach
You’re never more than 20 minutes away from a beach on Long Island. Grab you swimsuit and head down to the South Shore for the ocean or the North Shore for the Long Island Sound. I’ve recently been loving YouSwim bathing suits – they’re one size and are AMAZING. If you fluctuate weight at all, these will be your best friends. Only downside is they are on the pricey side – so i found this amazing Amazon dupe set!
Kayaking
If you aren’t a swimmer there are plenty of opportunities to take advantage of kayaking! Whether you are out on the North Fork or if you are in Nissequoge, there are plenty of waterways to explore by kayak. There are also many rental companies that can help point you in the direction of good kayak routes to take. Kayaking is a great outdoor activity on Long Island!
Hiking
Many people will escape Long Island in search of mountains in Upstate New York, but don’t be so quick to leave because Long Island is home to some incredible hiking trails. From the Greenbelt Trail to Cold Spring Harbor there are some beautiful and challenging hikes on Long Island. If you are looking for a Long Island outdoor activity where you can explore the scenery around you, hiking is the perfect option. These are my favorite hiking boots – check them out if you need a pair before embarking on your next Long Island hike!
Pickleball
Pickleball is growing so fast on Long Island! There are outdoor courts popping up in many parks, I’ve seen a few in Smithtown and Long Beach. You may think of pickleball as an indoor activity, but not on Long Island. You can get outside and enjoy this outdoor activity on Long Island. Don’t forget to grab your pickleball paddles!
Running/Walking
Getting outside for outdoor activities on Long Island is as easy as putting on your running shoes ( my favorite Hoka Mach 5s ) and getting outside for a walk or run. Whether it’s around your neighborhood or on the Sunken Meadow Boardwalk, there’s no easier way to get active and get outside than going to a walk or run.
Biking
If you’re looking to get outside on Long Island and want a little more action than just a walk or a run, then biking is for you. You can take your beach cruiser out on the Long Beach Boardwalk or take your mountain bike out to Black Diamond Trailhead in Deer Park, New York. Depending on the intensity you are looking for, biking is a great workout too, there is a trail for you! I’m impartial to my beach cruiser because I love biking next to the ocean on the boardwalk but there’s something so special about biking through nature on a mountain bike!
Golf
We are on Long Island after all, how could golf not be mentioned?! – Long Island is home to some incredible golf courses. There’s not better way to spend a sunny day than out on the course with your friends. You can find great local golf courses at every turn or you can test you skills at more challenging courses like Bethpage Black or Shinnecock Hills (if you can get in to the private course).
