Friday Five: Things I Can’t Live Without

This week has been one for the books, full of friends, amazing weather, and productivity. I’ve been to the beach most days and nights, which I can’t complain about and got to celebrate my friend’s quarantine birthday. It really is starting to feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel with all of this. It’s blowing my mind that this weekend is Memorial Day Weekend, time is seriously flying this year.

With each week being pretty insanely different from the last, I thought it would be fun to put together my Friday Five. Each week I’ll be sharing 5 things that I would not of been able to survive this week without.


I am so sunburnt. I’ve been complaining about it on Instagram all week and you’re all probably sick of it, but I’m going on my soapbox one more time. I would of died without Aloe this week. I managed to only burn my face, shoulders and 1/2 of my legs, but it’s hand down the second worst burn I’ve gotten in my life. Nothing will compare to the agony of sunburn in Hawaii in 2002.

I’m linking my go-to Aloe lotion here. Banana Boat Aloe Lotion has been a staple in my life since as long as I can remember, but this week I’m more thankful than ever. I’ve never been a fan of the Aloe gel because I think it gets gross and sticky, so the lotion has been my go-to. Regardless, the Aloe lotion has been the biggest life saver so far. The only thing positive about my sunburn fiasco, is that the first burn of the season is done. Guess what? It’ll turn to tan and I won’t burn the rest of the summer. #silverlinings

H&M Sweatshorts

My sunburn is awful and it is painful to put on jeans or leggings, so I’ve been living in my H&M sweatshorts. I’ve been building my collection of these for almost 3 years now and I think I have all the color options possible. They are super light-weight and comfy, so don’t think heavy sweatpants material. Not to mention they are only $12.99, so they don’t break the bank. In my opinion, they’re the perfect lounge short!


Being on the job market during this time is absolutely insane, and I am right in the middle of it. There are millions of people without employment and it’s terrifying to think that there are more layoffs anticipated in the near future. I am so thankful for LinkedIn for being such an incredible social network of professionals. Between the people I have met during my previous jobs or those who have reached out during my current job hunt, it’s been incredible to me to first hand witness people helping people.

I’ve had several interviews this week with some pretty incredible companies and am so optimistic about the future and where I will land. I have to thank LinkedIn for playing a part in keeping up the positive vibes. LinkedIn has become a part of my daily routine, from messaging and speaking with my connections, to applying for jobs, to speaking with recruiters. It is filled with so many individuals who are around to help.

How to Make Your Comeback Better Than the Setback

Who remembers Britney Spears in 2007? I absolutely do. That, my friends, is coming damn near close to hitting rock bottom. Shaved head and all Britney climbed back up from the depths of darkness to one of the best comebacks the world has ever seen. As much as I hope no one ever gets near rock bottom, there’s sometimes other things that happen in our life that can send us into an emotional spiral.

Let’s admit it, life isn’t always butterflies and rainbows. We’ve all had those moments where it seems like any and all things that can go wrong, go wrong. But let’s take a page out of Britney’s 2007 book, get back up and bounce back to your bad ass self that you know you are.

Things are going to happen, break-ups, fights, disappointments at work, even something as small as forgetting to do something you had to do! Don’t you dare let your setback ruin your comeback. Whatever it is that has got you all out of sorts, let’s handle it and get you back to the strong confident person you know you are. As one of my favorite people told me, “put on your big girl jeggings and handle it.” So let’s do the damn thing:

1. Embrace How You Are Feeling

This is your time to get your emotions out. Get mad, get angry, get ridiculously upset, give yourself five minutes of emotional time. Whatever you are going through or dealing with, really feel it and all the emotions that go with it.

Honestly, get your emotions out. A little cry never hurt anyone and neither did getting really angry about a situation. Think about what happened, really reflect on your feelings, why you feel that way, and what caused it to get to this point. Really bask in the crappiness of what happened to you. We are not in the business of brushing emotions under the rug and forgetting about them. Own it.

Seriously, let every single emotion out. Rant to your friends. Write in your journal. Throw a hissy fit in your room. Don’t punch walls or people, let’s let out our emotions while controlling anger :). Do not hold back. Why is this important? Because embracing your emotions makes you more aware of what is going on. It helps spark a little fire under your butt to do something about it and make change.

Maybe that guy you were talking to ghosted you. That sucks. You really liked him and really thought it could go somewhere. Get mad. How could someone do something like that to you?! Maybe you were expecting a promotion at work and it went to someone else. Be angry, you worked hard every day and produced quality work every single day. Maybe a relationship ended that you didn’t expect to. Losing someone close to you sucks especially when you didn’t want it to happen. Be sad, it’s okay to cry about it.

You know what happens from owning your emotions and really thinking about what’s happened? It sparks action.

2. Identify What the Problem is

You got all the feels out of the way now, so let’s move on and figure out what exactly the problem is.

Confirmed – You know how you feel about what happened to you and it’s not a good feeling. Do not allow yourself to become a Negative Nancy. It’s easy to get lost in your emotions and start thinking that different aspects of your life are falling apart also (when they really aren’t). You might even start to nit-pick yourself and ask questions like “What if I didn’t do this?” or “What if I had done that?” What if questions are deadly, avoid those at all costs.

Let’s use the break-up as the example here. Break-ups suck, if you do the breaking up or get broken up with, there is still a lot of pain and emotions involved. Let’s not go Carrie Underwood in this and start keying the side of trucks.

First ask yourself – How exactly do you feel about what’s happened and why?

“Like trash” has been my go-to for when I feel negative emotions, but that’s not helping yourself. Think about each emotion and why.

Why are you sad? You’re losing one of your best friends are it’s hard to imagine life without them. You weren’t expecting this. You think you hurt someone you deeply care about’s feelings. You already miss the person.
Why are you angry? You can’t believe you poured so much into one relationship to have it fail. Some choice words might have been exchanged and you are heated about it.

Next, ask yourself – Does it make sense that I feel this way?

Let’s be honest with ourselves, sometimes the crisis handling stops here. I am 100% guilty of realizing my emotions are uncalled for and it’s pretty funny to look back and laugh about some things that I let get under my skin. But remember if you neglect to reflect on why you are feeling some sort of way, you might not ever have this realization. Go through each emotion and if you come to the conclusion that all those feels are justifiable, then:

Finally, ask yourself – What is it that is really bothering me?

Maybe you start to come to the conclusion that you are sad because this happened again. Rejection and failure are two pretty hard pills to swallow.

Maybe you understand that some of your actions, or theirs, were just unacceptable and the relationship was unhealthy. Letting go of something, even if it is not right for you, is tough to do.

Use these questions for whatever situation you find yourself in. Understand exactly what it is that is causing you to be upset.

3. Find the Silver Lining

I am such a firm believer that there is a positive that comes out of every crappy situation. Our girl Britney went from shaving her head in an emotional meltdown to releasing the #1 Billboard Album, Circus. She even etched that $30 million dollar Las Vegas residency deal a few years ago! If she could get through 2007, then you can damn right get through today.

As miserable as you may think a situation is, there is also some piece of positivity that can come from it. Change your perspective and realize that not everything is in the shitter. It’s difficult to do when you think everything is going up in flames in one big old dumpster fire around you, but there are so many good things happening that you might not even notice.

Try to come up for 5 things that make you happy, they can be anything! They might have nothing to do with the situation that just happened, but get brainstorming. Once you do this you might have a different perspective looking at the crap setback you have in your life. Look at the situation through a different pair on glasses, and it might open your eyes to seeing some new things.

Plan Your Comeback

Now that you looked through the original problem and can see that it is not as debilitating as it seemed. It’s time to get to action.

So let’s make the damn thing happen.

Pick your head up and get to work. No sulking here. You don’t get time back and the more time you wait the tougher it will be to get a grasp on what’s happened to you. The final few questions you need to ask yourself here are –

What am I going to accomplish?
Is this maintainable and something I can stick to?
How am I going to get this done?

With that I’ll leave you with something to think about. Only you know what you are really feeling and going through, don’t let anyone tell you that you should or should not be having a set of emotions. Because you are in control of how you feel, you are also in control of how you come back!

Remember that you are strong, confident, amazing human who is capable of incredible things. Don’t ever let some person or event take that from you.

10 Outdoor Activities Anyone Can Do

The weather is finally starting to warm up here on Long Island. Yes, I am in New York and have been for almost a week now. I have a feeling I’ll spending a lot more time here in the near future. Anywho, it’s really starting to feel like summer and that comes with all the feels. The warm weather makes its more difficult to stay inside and #stayhome. Now that the weather is cooperating, it’s easy to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and keep up with social distancing guidelines. Here’s some ideas for getting outside and enjoying the weather and how I’m doing it!


If the parks and preserves near you are open, hiking is an awesome way to get outside and escape your house (and maybe your family, but bring them along for company if you want). I’ve been heading to Sunken Meadow State Park, pretty religiously, when there’s been a nice day. Yes, there is an awesome boardwalk that overlooks the Long Island Sound. My favorite park though is the trails that go throughout the woods on the property. There’s some pretty steep trails that bring you down the to Sound but you can also get lost in the wooded area. Avalon Park and Preserve in Stony Brook is also an amazing place to walk around in nature. If you’re looking for a well-maintained place to explore, this is it. There’s art on the trails, plenty of wildlife, and even a large field to roam.


If theres a waterway nearby you, get to fishing. Am I skilled by any means? No. But it is extremely relaxing. I’m lucky enough to have a creek in my backyard that connects to the Atlantic Ocean. There’s tons of stripers that find their way in and I’ve managed to snag a few. There’s tons of spots to cast at on Long Island, and you can easily pick up some equipment from Dick’s. They’re doing curb-side pick-up and it really is a breeze!


Getting a little exercise is always a good thing. I’ve been finding myself glued to the sofa working and letting time get away from me. Kayaking has been so much fun and I don’t even realize how sore I am from it til the next few days! Getting fresh air and being on the water can’t be beat. I’ve been kayaking all around the North Fork of Long Island and found some pretty cool spots to explore. There’s tons of boat ramps and docks along the Long Island Sound and the Great South Bay where you can launch off from. Dick’s again is the go-to. You can order a Kayak to be picked up curb-side and they will even help you put the kayak on the roof of your car for transport.


It’s BBQ season baby! Get outside and cook some burgers, dogs, chicken, and whatever else your heart desires. I’m a huge fan of being killing two birds with one stone. Getting outside to grill gets you outside, having fresh air, while preparing some awesome food for lunch or dinner. If there’s an excuse to get outside, I will find it. Hey it’ll also save you some money on UberEats spending you’ve been doing lately!

Play an Outdoor Sport

Being a lacrosse rat, it’s hard for me to not play. It’s been fun picking up my lacrosse stick and going up to the field to get some reps in. Not only does it bring me back to the glory days, but it is an awesome workout. Grab a soccer ball or a basketball and start playing! Even pick up something new. Always wanted to try skateboarding? Go get a skateboard and start learning. People have been coming across a lot more free time during the stay at home order. It seems like a pretty good time to learn a new skill or try something new to me!

Read Outside

I was never a big reader, but have started to appreciate getting lost in the chapters of a book. Yes it’s nice to cozy up indoors and open a book, but why not take that outdoors? I’ll hop on my hammock or lay out on a lounge chair in my backyard and just read! Just because you want to get outside doesn’t mean you have to be running or doing something physically active. Take a break, enjoy the sun, and read a new book! You can go on Amazon and get books for a Kindle or have them sent to you via Prime. Outdoor Yoga

In my post about staying active while the gyms are close, I mentioned my favorite at-home yoga practice, Yoga with Adriene. When the sun is shining I’ll take my yoga mat outside and set up my practice outdoors. I always see those outdoor yoga classes at the beach or a local park and I’m pretty intimidated to try them because I am still such a beginner, so making my own little outdoor yoga studio in my backyard has been pretty incredible.


I hate running, so much. I’ve been making a point of trying to get into it though. Even though it is a brutal, there’s no better time than right now to get out and start adding running into your routine. I think it would be pretty cool to say i can run a marathon at some point in my life. That might be a stretch, but you know what I mean. Throughout college I never realized how much running was involved in lacrosse, it just was part of the game. I’m trying to get back into good running shape and this warm weather is making it easy to get outside and make that happen. I downloaded Nike Run Club to track my progress and that’s been a pretty awesome motivator. They have challenges you can join and it keeps track of distance and time for all your runs. If you’ve been thinking about getting in shape or trying to get into running, now seems like a pretty good time to start!


Get outside and plant some flowers, or herbs, or veggies! It’s a Mother’s Day tradition in my house to go to the local nursery and pick out new flowers for the window boxes on the house. It’s always something I’ve done with my mom and loved! We’ve planted some vegetables in the backyard and it’s pretty cool to see them grow back year after year.

Outdoor Dinners

Any excuse to get outside is a good excuse. If you have an outdoor table, set it up for an outdoor meal. Even if it’s just sitting in chair, it’s nice to get out of the house. Since there is really no where to have a sit-down dinner right now, I’ve been picking up food from my favorite restaurants and bringing it to the park or the beach. Even sitting in my Jeep with the windows down is a nice change of scenery from my kitchen.

These past couple weeks have been a struggle for many, myself included. The lay-offs are continuing, the virus has not hit its peak, and summer is slowly but surely getting cancelled. I feel like I’m getting numb to all the bad news that keeps coming out in the news and on social media daily.

I am currently on the job hunt, along with millions of other people and have had little to no luck thus far. The next two concerts I had planned in May and June (1. Sleeping with Sirens and 2. Above & Beyond) were cancelled because of Coronavirus. I was supposed to be at Disney World today and don’t have much hope for my Disney World trip in July. Pretty much every Jeep or Truck Show I was looking forward to has been cancelled.

I know I’m not alone here with the bad vibes, but I also know that so many people have it worse. My bad news is nothing compared to what other people are experiencing. The stories I’ve been hearing about those who have been closely affected by Covid-19 are saddening. It breaks my heart knowing how many people have had their lives derailed in any capacity because of this virus.

The bad news may keep piling on top of more bad news with no end in sight, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. No matter how tough the current situation is, it will get better. It’s tough keeping positive when everything around is so negative. I’ve put together some of my favorite positive quotes and mantras that are super applicable to the current state of our world. First 5 Things I’m Doing When the Stay at Home Order is Lifted

It’s been a long 5 weeks of not being able to do anything expect exist and eat. Staying at home is nice and so is spending a lot of time with family, but the daily repetition is brutal. All the days are starting to melt together. I miss going out, seeing my friends, and just interacting with other humans. Here’s the first 5 things that are on my to-do list as soon as like goes back to semi-normal.

Going to TJ Maxx, HomeGoods, and Marshalls

Being cooped up inside all day has my mind going crazy with interior design ideas. I just want to walk through the aisles of TJ Maxx and fill my shopping cart with all the things I don’t really need but know I can’t live without. I say I want to go get some things for my apartment, but we all know you leave TJ Maxx and Marshalls with a lot more than you plan on.

Getting my hair, nails, and eyebrows done

I’m really not high maintenance at all, but looking like a slug is not a good look for anyone. These caterpillar eyebrows are tough. It is a fact that I am getting out of the house and treating myself to a little self-love day. Even some of the guys in my life need to do this. Quarantine hair, beards, and mustaches need some grooming!

Having a sit down dinner at a really nice restaurant

I’ve been supporting local restaurants as much as possible, but there’s something different about actually going to a restaurant and eating there. I never realized how much of a foodie I was until now. I really do enjoy going out to eat and trying these amazing dishes that we all know I can’t create myself. I am very much looking forward to having a nice sit down dinner when the stay at home order is all over. No cleaning either!

Hanging out with my friends, in public places, not 6 feet apart

I miss being able to hang out at the beaches, the vineyards, Target, Chipotle, and pretty much everywhere with my friends. Staying at home with my family is nice but nothing beats hanging with your best friends and not having to worry about a thing. Not about being a certain distance apart, or wearing a mask, or passing around hand sanitizer every 10 minutes, just stress-free hanging. I need some of that in my life.

Going to the Gym

I miss my gym. I have to admit I was not the most consistent recently with making it to the gym and I was beating myself up for that. After not being allowed to go I’ve realized how much I actually enjoy lifting weights and training. Home workouts are absolutely killer (check my post on best at-home fitness ideas) but it’s not the same for me. Not being able to go to the gym has relit my fire and has me ready to get back to the gym like the old days. I want to lift heavy weight in a grungy weight room and blast music so I can’t hear anyone around me. Don’t judge me.

I’m ready for life to get back to normal and go back to my old routine. It’s crazy how quickly so many everyday activities and tasks were totally changed or eliminated in about a week’s time because of the pandemic. Life Lessons Learned During the Covid-19 Stay at Home Order

Throughout the past almost 7 weeks of staying at home because of Coronavirus, I’ve managed to do some thinking about pretty much everything. It’s not very often that I have this much time on my hands. If you follow me on instagram you know I’ve been on the go, and “stay at home” wasn’t really a thing for me. I just hit the road not as frequently as normal.

I’ve managed to travel between New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Don’t worry social distancing was practiced and plenty of hand sanitizer was used. Being able to “stay at home,” made me realize that I don’t really know where home is and that’s totally ok. I like exploring and seeing new places. In the crazy life, the most important thing is to be happy and I’m thankful for this pandemic for showing me that. Here’s how I’ll be focusing on happiness from here on out:

Get outside and enjoy the world as much as possible.

There is so much to see and so much to do. Staying inside for even one whole day is torturous. Whether it’s a walk around your neighborhood or a hike up in the mountains, getting outside is therapeutic.

Fresh air is an amazing thing. It’s easy to get lost in the day to day craziness of work or life and sooner rather than later you’ve been stuck inside for a week straight. I’ve managed to come up with over 15 places, near and far, that I have added to my to-do list for the year. I will make them all happen.

Life LessonFind what moves you and get going. For me its traveling, road tripping, and getting outside to see new places.

Appreciate the people around you.

You are the people you surround yourself with. That’s always been a fact that I’ve loved. Being around people who lift you up and make you the best you that you can be is so important.

From friends to family, this quarantine has allowed me to get closer to the best friends and family. I didn’t think that would be possible, but when it comes down to it your people keep you together. It’s been the new normal to find ways to get together and stay close when the world is literally out to make that impossible.

Life LessonDistance sucks, but it can’t break your closest relationships. Distance can be a tricky thing, but it also makes the heart grow fonder.

Don’t do things that take away from your happiness.

This is a huge thing for me. I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching lately about what I should be doing and what really makes me happy. I’ve started doubling down on putting my energy where I get the most happiness and removing it from areas that are taking from my happiness.

Just one small shift in energy can change your whole mood. Life is to be determined (see what I did there). There’s no point in being unhappy or chasing something that just doesn’t do it for you.

During this quarantine I made some pretty big life choices that can really alter the rest of my life. Wild stuff. In the end I know I’ll be better off than I was before because if there’s one thing you should focus on, it’s being happy.

Do things for you.

It comes down to being happy, and I forget about that from time to time. Did it take a pandemic and a nationwide shut down for me to realize that? Yes. There’s always a rainbow after rain. That works as a metaphor, I think?

Regardless do things that make you happy. Life is too short to be with people who irritate you, to spend time at a job you don’t like, and to be doing things you don’t want to be doing.

If it’s 5 minutes a day or the whole 24 hours, do something you’ve always wanted to do. You’ve got time with this whole quarantine thing.
